According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the monument is, "Measuring 6'6" x 3' x 11', the monument has a simple base & carved pedestal supporting an inscribed shield framed by granite cannon tubes and surmounted by a molded capstone."

According to the location information provided by the National Park Service the monument is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield in the woods south of Brotherton Road along the horse trail


Captain W.W. Carnes was a young man of excellent literary and military attainments. He was in the graduating class at the United States Naval Academy when the war commenced, and at the time he was made captain of this battery he was only twenty years old, and was beyond a doubt the youngest captain of artillery in the Confederate States Army.
