12” x 10”, three rows of anonymous ribbon bedecked troopers having “BTRR” collar dogs on chocolate brown mount, no imprint. Identified on verso as “Butcher Town Rough Riders/of North St. Louis, Missouri/Taken about 1911.” The location is given as “City Hall Bldg of St. Louis.” Butcher Town was the slaughter house district of St. Louis that took its name from the nearby stock yards. Organized about the time of the St. Louis World's Fair, the Butcher Town Rough Riders were a trade group and Irish social club organized to mimic Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders of San Juan Hill fame. Mounted in full Rough Rider regalia the troop highlighted parades, funerals, and social events until dwindling before the First World War. This albumen captured a jaunty if not comical cadre of erstwhile cavalrymen including a pint size T.R./Charlie Chaplin look-alike standing next to a pair of well-fed artisans seemingly too corpulent to be hard charging equestrians.
