Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, July 1, 1826, to April 20, 1836.Served: at the Military Academy, 1827 to 1829, as Principal Assistant Professor of Engineering, August 30, 1826 to April 21, 1827 and as Principal Assistant Professor of Engineering, April 21, 1827 to August 30, 1829; as Assistant Engineer in the construction of Fort Monroe, Virginia 1828 and of Fort Adams, Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, 1829 to 1832; as Assistant to the Chief Engineer at Washington, D.C. 1832 to 1834 and at the Military Academy, as Acting Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, November 22, 1834, to April 20, 1836, and Professor, April 20, 1836, to February 14, 1871.Retired from Active Service, February 14, 1871, on his own application after forty years of continuous service. Civil History. Degree of A.M. conferred by New Jersey College, Princeton, New Jersey 1837 and of LL. D., by Geneva College, New York 1847. Author of a Treatise on Optics 1839; of Synthetical Mechanics 1850 to 1858; of Acoustics and Optics 1852 to 1959; of Analytical Mechanics 1853 to 1859 and of Spherical Astronomy 1855 to 1858, all designed for the use of the Cadets of the United States Military Academy. Member of several scientific associations, 1840 to 1865 and Corporator of the National Academy of Sciences since March 3, 1863. Actuary of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, 1871 to 1889 and Author of Mortuary Experience of the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, from 1843 to 1874.
