John A. Campbell, before becoming a Cadet, enlisted as Private, May 10, 1861, in 5th Missouri Volunteers; in service three months. Re-ënlisted Nov. 7, 1861, in 19th Missouri Volunteers, as Private; also Quartermaster Sergeant, 3d Missouri Volunteers. Was in the Battle of Wilson's Creek, and at the Siege of Vicksburg.

Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy, Oct. 19, 1863, to June 17, 1867, when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut., 2d Artillery, June 17, 1867.Served: in garrison at Alcatraz Island, Cal., Oct. 30, 1867, to May 1, 1868; on frontier duty, at Ft. Kodiak, Alas., June 6, 1868, to Aug. 31, 1870, — and Sitka, Alas., Sep., 1870; in garrison at the Presidio, San Francisco, Cal., Oct., 1870, to Oct. 31, 1871, — Alcatraz Island, Cal., Nov., 1871, to Mar. 26, 1872, — Ft. Monroe, Va. (Artillery School for Practice), May 1, 1872, to May 1, 1873, — Ft. Macon, N. C., May to Sep. 25, 1873, — Ft. McHenry, Md., Oct. 1, 1873, to Sep. 5, 1874, —(First Lieut., 2d Artillery, July 24, 1874)Marion, S. C., Sep. 18 to Oct. 31, 1874, — Ft. Macon, N. C., Nov., 1874, to Oct., 1875, — and at Raleigh, N. C., Oct., 1875.
