The 2nd Rhode Island organized in June 1861 and was on the field at the Battle of First Bull Run. It continued to serve in the Army of the Potomac throughout the war and served to its end, mustering out in July 1865. It had several engagements during the Shenandoah Valley campaign. The Second was Rhode Island's fighting regiment. It fired the opening volley at First Bull Run, and was in line at the final scenes of Appomattox.
