AT THE AGE OF 14 ALLIE STEWART, NIECE OF GENERAL J.E.B. STEWART (sic) OF CONFEDERATE FAME, ALTHOUGH TOO YOUNG TO BE REGISTERED AND RECOGNIZED AS SUCH, ENLISTED AT ST. LOUIS AS A WAS NURSE. HER FATHER JOINED THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND HER BROTHER JOINED THE UNION.
SHE SERVED DURING 67 BATTLES. HER FIRST EXPERIENCE WAS AT THE BATTLE OF WILSON CREEK, WHERE SHE SAW GENERAL LYON FALL MORTALLY WOUNDED. ALWAYS SEARCHING THE WOUNDED FOR HER BROTHER SHE WAS ARRESTED TWICE FOR BEING FOUND ON THE BATTLEFIELD.
SHE IS THE KNOWN AS BEING THE ONLY NURSE TO BE SHOT (IN THE NECK) WHILE ATTENDING TO THE WOUNDED ON THE BATTLEFIELD.
