Early's extortion/demand letter to the town of Gettysburg and the
town official's June 26, 1863 reply. In nice shape.
Stamped "J.A.Danner, Gettysburg, Pa." at bottom of mount. Joel A. Danner created the first Gettysburg museum of battlefield relics named Danner's Museum. Danner's Museum was in operation from 1865-1890. The museum was located on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg not far from what is now Lincoln Square.
General Early met with David Kendlehart, the president of Gettysburg's town council. General Early made demands on the town that included extremely large quantities of bacon, flour, salt, sugar, onions, hats and shoes. If these demands were not met, Early's soldiers would burn Gettysburg.
