Foster, Robert S., brigadier-general, was born in Vernon,
Jennings county, Ind., Jan. 27, 1834, where he received a
common school education. Joining the Union army at the
outbreak of the war he fought to the close, being advanced
from rank to rank until, on March 3I, 1865, he received the
brevet of major-general of volunteers for gallant conduct in
the field. He became. captain in the IIth Ind. infantry,
April 22, I86I, major of the I3th Ind. infantry June I9, I86I,
and was promoted lieutenant-colonel on Oct. 28 of that year,
and colonel April 30, 1862. He was commissioned brigadier-
general of volunteers June I2, 1863. He resigned Sept. 25,
1865, and was offered a lieutenant-colonelcy in the regular
army but declined and took up his residence in Indianapolis,
where he was city treasurer from 1867-72. He was United
States marshal for the District of Indiana from I88I to 1885.
Gen. Foster died March 3, 1903.
